What are Interlocking Concrete Pavers?

Interlocking Concrete Pavers are also known as segmental pavers. While this pavement type has been around since Roman times, pavers back then were not the same as now. Segmental pavers are made out of concrete, hence- interlocking concrete pavers.

Moreover, the interlocking pavement installation is done to "interlocks" each paver to strengthen the material and provide a pattern to the flooring. There are many different types and designs of interlocking pavements. Thus, you can contact us regarding our plans and what we can recommend for you!

Recently, interlocking concrete pavements have been a popular choice as an alternative to other exterior flooring types. Besides its aesthetic appeal, interlocking concrete pavers are also strong against constant traffic and erosion.

 Why Use Interlocking Pavers

Most of us don't give much attention to our driveways. However, installing interlocking pavers in your driveway or other exterior areas can dramatically improve your home's curb appeal. It also has a broad number of advantages that go beyond its appearance.

Stones that are fashioned to fit together firmly, giving the appearance of cobblestones or tiles, are known as interlocking pavers. This results in a stunning, robust, and highly customizable to fit the plan and aesthetic of your home.

If you're thinking about replacing your concrete or brick driveway, there are a few compelling reasons why interlocking stone pavers would be the best solution.

Let's talk about some of the best things about stone pavers.

Durable

Interlocking pavers can last 40 years at a minimum. Like everything else, if neglected, all types of pavers will start to degrade by the time they hit over a decade of use. However, it is a given that pavers will eventually experience shifting or sinking.

However, if interlocking concrete pavers are given the proper care and maintenance, they will last generations. Moreover, the upkeep of interlocking pavers is not heavy on the pocket.

Interlocking pavers only need minor fixes if adequately cared for most of the time. For example, interlocking paver stones will be easier to replace and put back into the pavement. This is because it is easy to take out individual stones instead of having to re-set materials like asphalt and concrete.

 Why Stone Pavers

 Versatile and Highly Flexible

An interlocking concrete paving stone, as its name suggests, is made out of concrete. They are dense, strong, and capable of withstanding continuous wear and tear. While the individual stones make it feel like they can only come in one pattern, don't fret.

Interlocking paving stones are versatile. They come in a large variety of colors, shapes, and sizes. In addition, there are a ton of different stone textures as well. Thus, there are also a variety of patterns and designs that one can come up with.

Moreover, interlocking paving stones are flexible enough to be perfect for any structure. Want to know more about which designs and patterns are the best for you and your structure?

 Affordable Option

When it comes to price, it's challenging to beat interlocking concrete pavers. In terms of cost, pavers are less expensive than concrete and asphalt. Concrete pavers are even cheaper and more durable than identical pavers constructed of clay, granite, or sandstone, which are comparable in appearance but not in cost. It also costs less to maintain, repair, and replace interlocking concrete pavers than other options. This is because they are more durable and last longer than other options.

As demonstrated above, interlocking concrete pavers outperform other hardscape building materials in terms of benefits and advantages. Please do not hesitate to call Victoria Concrete and Paving if you have any questions about how to schedule an interlock installation.

FAQS

Here are answers to some common questions.

  • What do you put under interlocking stone?

Before putting in the interlocking stones, there must be a layer of sand between the stone and the base (also known as the "foundation"). This is to strengthen the base, make it more even, and make it a smooth pavement. Moreover, sand also allows interlocking stones to be more stable and compact.

The amount and height of the sand put under interlocking stones will depend on the traffic and the weight of the traffic. Moreover, having sand between the base and the stones will make it easier for water to drain. Thus, ensuring the longevity of the interlocking pavers.

Furthermore, sand is not only put under interlocking stones to give it more stability and evenness. After laying down the paving stones on top of the base covered with sand, more sand is put on top of the interlocked stones to fill in gaps between stones.

  • What is the best base for interlocking stone?

To ensure that your pavement is durable and can withstand different weather conditions, a strong base underneath to support it. There are various materials for the base to choose from, but let us backtrack to the required materials first.

First layer: Geotextile: Geotextiles are essential for a durable and robust base. Geotextile makes it easier to keep the primary layer of the base and the ground from mixing. Moreover, it provides additional support for your pavement and ensures its longevity.

Second layer: Main base: There are many different varieties of main bases to choose from. Moreover, the depth of the main base is determined by the kind of traffic it will experience. Will it only experience foot traffic or vehicles as well? Thus, here is a list of different bases listed down for you:

    - Gravel: A versatile and widely available choice for pavers. Gravel is strong, cheap, and can withstand different types of traffic, whether on foot or wheels. Thus, gravel is the most popular choice of base for pavers.

    - Crushed stone: Crushed stone is the best choice for interlocking stone pavers that will experience heavy use. It is also a versatile choice for different kinds of pavers.

    - Compacted soil: Compacted soil is suitable for pavements that won't experience much traffic. However, compacted soil is also challenging to maintain, and the paver will experience much more shifting and sinking without constant care and maintenance

    - Sand: For areas that experience constant rain or are often wet, sand is a good choice as it makes it easier for water to drain through and keeps your interlocking stone pavers in good condition.

Third layer - Sand: It is vital to lay sand on the topmost layer. Sand plays a fundamental role in maintaining and longevity of your interlocking pavement layer. The sand will keep your interlocking pavers in place and strengthen your base overall. Furthermore, adding sand provides a ton of other benefits as well. For example, implementing a layer of sand will make it easier for your pavement to drain moisture. Thus, your paver will last longer and make maintenance less of a challenge.

The base will be compacted to ensure that the paver will experience minimal movement and support the traffic it is meant to endure.

  • How do professionals install pavers?

Just like each landscape is different, not one installation is the same. Each interlocking paver will be unique to its environment and the tastes of its owner, too. Thus, professionals apply different ways and methods to ensure that your flooring and landscape will be the best and last as long as they can.

In general, though, a few steps apply to installing interlocking concrete pavers. All professionals will follow a variation of each phase for different circumstances.

Site inspection: Here at Victoria Concrete and Paving, we want to look at your area to prepare the site for installation. Therefore, the very first step will be to inspect the site to figure out the best way for us to install each stone into the area.

Preparing and clearing the area for the base: Before the interlocking stone pavers are laid on the ground, the area needs to be prepared. Since the site inspection revealed the required depth, professionals will dig and clear the area to make way for the base.

Laying down the base: As preparation is complete, the next step is to lay down each base layer. We ensure that the base is perfect enough to support the pavement, which will experience decades of wear and tear.

Installing the interlocking pavement: And, the final step. We make sure that each stone is laid down the right way. Thus, the paver will be even, beautiful, and perfect for you.
